It’s one of the big annoyances for any house hunter: a property listed without a price.
When you’re doing your research, one of the key considerations is how much a seller wants for their home. But with so many properties listed as ‘new to market’, ‘auction’, ‘contact agent’ or with just an empty line where the price should be, it can be frustrating. Are you missing out on bargains? Wasting your time on homes you could never afford?
Luckily, there’s an easy way to see how much real estate agents think these properties are worth.
How to find out the price range for any property
When someone uploads a property to either Domain or Real Estate, they have to include a price (or a price range), they just don’t have to display it. Real estate agents will give you plenty of reasons why they might want to do this, but knowledge is power and when you’re looking at making the biggest purchase of your life it’s best to have as much information as possible.
Luckily, if you’re on a desktop or laptop, you can find the price guide of any of these properties within a minute. It’s very slightly different depending on the site you’re using, but there’s only two steps you need to know.
1. Right click and press ‘View source’ (or press Ctrl + U)
Do this and you’ll see the code that makes up the site. You’ll see the HTML, the scripts and more. You do not need to be able to understand any of this.
2. Search for this term
With the code in front of you, you’re going to want to do a search by pressing Ctrl + F. This will bring up a search tool. On Chrome and Edge it’s at the top right of the screen, but it may be different on other browsers.
Depending on which site you’re on, your search term will be slightly different:
- On Domain, search for exactPriceV2
- On Real Estate, search for marketing_price_range
Chrome users can also download the Homer extension (previously KoalaData) to show this information front and centre in the listings, along with any price changes since the property was first listed.
