What’s it like to live in Budgewoi?

Budgewoi is built across two peninsulas separated by Budgewoi Lake, with Lake Munmorah behind it and the ocean in front, so water is visible from most parts of the suburb and audible from a good many. It is a quiet, established town with an older profile: residents in their sixties are the largest group, childless couples the most common household, and around two thirds of homes are owner-occupied. Plenty of people arrived as holidaymakers and stayed, and the caravan parks and fibro-and-brick beach shacks sitting alongside newer builds tell that story plainly.

The appeal is straightforward. This is one of the last genuinely unhurried coastal towns on the Central Coast, with a patrolled beach, a lake foreshore made for walking and riding, and a small shopping circle that covers the essentials without any of the weekend traffic that clogs the towns further south. Retirees and boat owners have always been the core, and they have been joined by younger families who wanted a beach street and do not mind driving for the bigger shop and the high school run. It is the kind of town where the surf club and the bowling club still carry the social calendar.

Budgewoi features

Lakes Beach is Budgewoi’s surf beach, a long open stretch patrolled by council lifeguards on weekdays and by The Lakes Surf Life Saving Club on weekends and public holidays. The club runs nippers through summer and keeps a beach wheelchair available for booking, and there is a dog off-leash section north of the clubhouse towards Ocean Street. Budgewoi Beach continues north from there for anyone after a longer and emptier stretch of sand.

Budgewoi Lake is the other half of the suburb’s outdoor life, shallow and protected, and well suited to prawning, fishing, kayaking and learning to sail. Slade Park on the foreshore is the main gathering point, with picnic tables, water views and a playground, and it marks the start of the long foreshore shared path that runs around the lake towards San Remo. The lake edges and wetlands are a serious birdwatching spot as well.

Budgewoi Circle is the town’s shopping area, with a Coles that opened in the mid-2000s and noticeably expanded the centre, alongside cafes, takeaways, a pharmacy and everyday services. For a full shop, Lake Haven Centre is the regional option, anchored by Kmart, Coles, Woolworths and Aldi with more than a hundred specialty stores, and it is the centre most of the northern Coast defaults to.

Munmorah State Conservation Area begins north of the town and is the reason many people come this far up the Coast: Birdie Beach and Frazer Beach, headland walks, camping grounds and some of the best whale watching on the coastline. Wallarah National Park sits inland to the west. Between them there is a lot of accessible bush and empty beach for a town of this size.

Budgewoi Public School covers Kindergarten to Year 6 within the suburb, with Northlakes High School at San Remo the usual secondary destination and Gorokan High School at Lake Haven the alternative. Halekulani Bowling Club nearby is a fixture for meals and lawn bowls. Buses run to Lake Haven Centre and Wyong Station, Wyong Hospital is the nearest emergency department, and the M1 is reached through the Doyalson interchange on the Pacific Highway.
