What’s it like to live in Erina?
Erina is where the Central Coast does its shopping, and yet the residential half of the suburb is far quieter than that reputation suggests. Behind the car parks of Erina Fair and the showrooms on Karalta Road are pockets of low-set brick homes, retirement villages and garden-style unit blocks on streets running down towards Erina Creek. The population skews older than most of the Coast: residents in their seventies are the largest single age group and childless couples the most common household, many of them people who sold a family home further out and wanted everything within reach. Professionals working in Gosford and the surrounding business parks make up much of the rest.
The appeal is convenience with a bush and water fringe. Groceries, medical suites, a cinema, a library branch and one of the region’s busiest bus interchanges all sit in the one precinct, and Terrigal Drive drops over the hill to the ocean in a matter of minutes. Away from the highway the mood shifts quickly, with creek flats, mangrove reserves and tracks climbing into the ridges behind the suburb. People tend to move here for the practical side, the ease of reaching Gosford, the hospital and the motorway, then stay because a beach, a bush walk and a full shopping centre can all fit into the same Saturday.
Erina features
Erina Fair on Terrigal Drive is the largest shopping centre on the Central Coast and the suburb’s defining landmark. Under one roof sit department stores, supermarkets, a long specialty mall, a cinema complex, the Erina Library branch and a food and restaurant precinct that stays busy well after the shops shut. The centre’s bus interchange is a genuine transport hub in its own right, with services fanning out to Gosford, Terrigal, Kincumber, The Entrance and the Peninsula, so plenty of people pass through Erina Fair without ever setting foot in a shop.
Erina Ice Arena, tucked into the Erina Fair complex, is an unlikely local institution. The full-size rink runs public skating sessions, learn-to-skate classes, discos, figure skating and ice hockey, and it is home ice for the Central Coast Rhinos. On a wet school holiday it pulls families in from across the region, and it gives the suburb something no other part of the Coast can offer.
Beyond the centre, The Entrance Road and Karalta Road form the Coast’s main large-format retail strip, lined with homemaker and hardware stores, furniture and electronics showrooms, car dealerships and trade suppliers. Smaller centres including Fountain Plaza, Karalta Plaza and Elizabeth Court cover the everyday end with supermarkets, cafes, chemists and services, and the side streets in between hold gyms, medical practices and small business parks. It is the precinct that makes Erina the service centre for everything east of Gosford.
Green space is closer than the shopfronts let on. Erina Creek runs along the southern edge of the suburb out into Brisbane Water, with mangrove-lined wetland reserves, quiet fishing and birdwatching spots and a shared path towards Gosford. Kincumba Mountain Reserve rises across the water to the south, one of the largest bushland reserves in the region, with picnic areas, walking tracks and lookouts over the water. Katandra Reserve, in the hills behind Erina Heights, protects a well-known pocket of rainforest and eucalypt bush.
For families, Woodport Public School and Erina High School sit within the suburb on and around The Entrance Road, Erina Heights Public School is just up the hill, and Central Coast Grammar School at Erina Heights is the best known private option in the area. Gosford Hospital and its medical precinct are a short run west, as is Gosford Station for trains to Sydney and Newcastle. Terrigal Drive climbs over the ridge to Terrigal Beach, and the Central Coast Highway ties Erina to Gosford and the M1.
