What’s it like to live in Ettalong Beach?
Ettalong Beach faces Broken Bay rather than the open ocean, and that single fact shapes everything about it. The water is calm, the foreshore is flat, and the pace is slower than the surf suburbs a few streets away. It is the oldest-skewing suburb on the Peninsula, with residents in their seventies the largest group and a median age in the low fifties, though the mix has been shifting as downsizers and creative types buy in. Just under sixty per cent of homes are owner-occupied, and the apartment buildings along The Esplanade have added a different kind of resident to what was once a fishing and holiday village.
People move here for the village and the view. The ferry pulls in from Palm Beach several times a day, the markets fill an undercover arcade every weekend, and the foreshore path connects through to Ocean Beach and Umina without a hill in sight. Ettalong has more of a day-trip atmosphere than its neighbours, which cuts both ways: there is a real cafe and gallery scene for a suburb of this size, and there are also weekends when finding a park near the water becomes a competitive sport. For anyone who wants water without surf, it is hard to beat.
Ettalong Beach features
Ettalong Beach looks across Broken Bay towards Box Head and Palm Beach, with calm water better suited to swimming, kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding than to surfing. The Palm Beach ferry docks at the wharf on Ferry Road several times daily, calling at Wagstaffe on the way and giving the village a direct link to Sydney’s northern beaches. The Esplanade doubles as a shared walking and cycling path running through to Ocean Beach and Umina Beach, flat the whole way and busy with walkers at either end of the day.
The Galleria on Ocean View Road is Ettalong’s oddest and best-loved building, a 1979 complex of Mediterranean arches, terraces and courtyards housing shops, cafes and restaurants. The Ettalong Beach Markets fill it every Saturday and Sunday and on public holiday Mondays, all of it undercover, so wet weather does not shut them down. Tucked inside is Cinema Paradiso, a family-run picture theatre with red velvet curtains and choc tops that screens new releases and arthouse films.
The village retail strip runs along Ocean View Road with cafes, a bakery, galleries and everyday services at village scale, and Bay Gallery on Broken Bay Road shows and sells work by local artists through a cooperative. Club Ettalong Diggers, formally the Ettalong Beach War Memorial Club, anchors the social side with bistro meals and entertainment and houses the local visitor information centre. The Mantra Ettalong Beach resort and the Atlantis development at Memorial Avenue and The Esplanade have reshaped the village centre since the mid 2000s.
Ettalong Public School on Karingi Street sits beside the town centre and has served the village for more than eighty years. Older students head to Brisbane Water Secondary College, with the Umina Campus on Veron Road taking Years 7 to 9 and the Woy Woy Campus on Edward Street taking Years 10 to 12. Woy Woy Hospital nearby handles rehabilitation and aged care, while Gosford Hospital covers emergencies. Peninsula netball is played at the courts on Lagoon Street, which draws a good chunk of the suburb out on winter Saturdays.
Busways routes connect Ettalong to Woy Woy railway station for trains to Sydney and Newcastle, and also run to the Umina retail centre, Kincumber and Erina Fair. Deepwater Plaza at Woy Woy covers the larger shopping trips. Brisbane Water National Park is a short drive behind the Peninsula, and the ferry loop across to Wagstaffe drops walkers close to Bouddi National Park and its coastal tracks. The Mount Ettalong headland gives the best view back over the bay and the boats moored off the wharf.
