What’s it like to live in Long Jetty?

Long Jetty sits on the eastern shore of Tuggerah Lake, a narrow run of streets between the water and the beach suburbs behind it, and over the past decade it has become the Central Coast’s most self-consciously creative address. The strip along The Entrance Road that once held bank agencies and a picture theatre now holds vintage dealers, galleries, bakeries and coffee shops, and locals cheerfully compare it to Newtown. The people who live here skew older than that reputation suggests: residents in their fifties are the largest group and childless couples the most common household, a mix of long-term lakeside families, renovators who came for the character housing, and professionals who wanted a walkable main street without a holiday-town crowd.

Day to day, life here runs along the lake. The foreshore reserve and its shared path are the suburb’s spine, used for morning walks, school runs on bikes and the ritual of watching the sun go down behind the water, which is genuinely the local event of the evening. Streets on the lake side are flat and quiet, while those climbing east towards Toowoon Bay and Shelly Beach put the ocean within an easy walk. People move here for that combination: a proper strip of shops you can reach on foot, water at both ends of the suburb, and neighbours who mostly know each other.

Long Jetty features

The jetty that gives the suburb its name runs 351 metres into Tuggerah Lake from the end of Archbold Road and was built in 1915. It is not the only one: Parry’s Jetty and Watkin’s Jetty sit further along the same foreshore, and all three are photographed relentlessly at dusk. Long Jetty Foreshore Reserve wraps around them with grass, picnic tables and barbecues, and the pelicans and black swans working the shallows are a permanent fixture.

The Entrance Road strip is the reason people drive here on weekends. The Glass Onion, Green Tangerine with its ‘Welcome to Long Jetty’ mural, Belle & Co Coffee House and Mr Sha Sha’s anchor the coffee end, Tiki La La deals in mid-century furniture and vinyl, and The Savoy, housed in the original 1950s cinema, does pizza, cocktails and live music. The Long Jetty Hotel is the old-school pub of the group and hosts Betty’s Flea Market once a month.

Walking and riding is how the suburb is organised. The lakefront shared path runs from Picnic Point through to Saltwater Creek Reserve, and it forms one leg of the Coast to Lake Walk, a loop linking The Entrance, Blue Bay, Toowoon Bay and Long Jetty that takes a couple of hours at a wandering pace. Jubilee Oval is the local sporting ground, home to The Entrance Cricket Club through summer, and Saltwater Creek itself is a favourite with kayakers and kids with nets.

Schooling is handled just outside the suburb. The Entrance Public School takes most local primary students, while high school runs through Tuggerah Lakes Secondary College, with Years 7 to 10 at the Berkeley Vale and Tumbi Umbi campuses and Years 11 and 12 at The Entrance campus. For health, the Long Jetty Health Care Facility is close by in Killarney Vale for community and outpatient services, with Wyong Hospital the nearest emergency department.

Getting around is by car or bus rather than train. Wyong Road and The Entrance Road carry the bus routes towards Tuggerah, where the station and Westfield Tuggerah sit together and the M1 entry is a short run further west. Bay Village at Bateau Bay handles the weekly shop, Toowoon Bay and Shelly Beach cover ocean swimming, and Wyrrabalong National Park and the Crackneck clifftops are close enough for a morning walk.
