What’s it like to live in Terrigal?
Terrigal is the Central Coast’s showpiece beach town, and it carries the weight of that easily. The Esplanade curves along the sand with hotels, restaurants and cafes on one side and the ocean on the other, while the residential streets climb steeply into the hills behind, where the good ones look straight down the coastline. Families are the dominant household here, with people in their forties the largest age group, and the suburb has a settled, well-established feel rather than a holiday-let one. Alongside long-term locals are Sydney movers, professionals who work in Gosford or travel for work, and downsizers who have taken a unit near the water.
Day to day, life revolves around the beach and the walk around it. Mornings belong to swimmers, surfers, the boardwalk crowd and the coffee queues; weekends bring the whole region in for the sand and the restaurants, which is the trade-off residents accept for living somewhere this good-looking. Move a street or two back and it settles down fast into ordinary suburban streets with school drop-offs and dog walkers. People come for the beach and the outlook, and they stay because the town has enough behind it, schools, sport, a proper dining strip, to work as a place to live rather than just visit.
Terrigal features
Terrigal Beach is the centrepiece, a long patrolled surf beach that runs from the town centre north towards Wamberal, with Terrigal Surf Life Saving Club on the sand and lifeguards through the season. At its southern end, the Terrigal Rock Pool sits among the rocks below the seawall, a shallow paddling pool that generations of local kids have learnt to swim in, and the boardwalk carries walkers on around the shoreline towards The Haven.
The Skillion is the landmark every photo of the town includes, a steep grassy headland that drops away to the ocean and gives one of the best coastal outlooks on the Coast. It is a standard evening walk for locals, a whale watching spot through the winter migration, and the high point of the walking tracks that thread around the headland reserve. Below it, The Haven is the sheltered side of the point, a calm bay with a boat ramp, picnic areas, the local fishing boats and the diving and snorkelling that the rocks around Broken Head attract.
The Haven oval sits right behind that beach and is the sporting heart of the suburb, home ground for the Terrigal Trojans rugby union club through winter and the Terrigal Matcham Cricket Club through summer, with the clubhouse and dog-friendly grass in constant use between matches. Terrigal Lagoon at the northern end of the beach is the other water feature locals use, shallow and sheltered, popular with small children and paddlers when it opens to the sea.
The Terrigal Esplanade and the streets running off it hold the dining and shopping strip: cafes and bakeries, boutiques, pubs and restaurants including The Cowrie up on the hill and a string of beachfront venues, with the Crowne Plaza Terrigal Pacific anchoring the middle of the beachfront. Council’s town centre works added a multi-level car park and the beachfront walkway, which is what makes the strip workable on a busy summer weekend. Markets and community events run through the year on the foreshore reserves.
For families, Terrigal Public School and Terrigal High School are both in the suburb, with Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Primary School the local Catholic option and Central Coast Grammar School at nearby Erina Heights a common independent choice. Erina Fair, the region’s largest shopping centre, is a straight run inland over Terrigal Drive, and the same road continues to Gosford for the hospital and Gosford Station, which handles trains to Sydney and Newcastle. North along the coast, Wyrrabalong National Park protects the headlands and littoral rainforest above Bateau Bay.
