What’s it like to live in The Entrance?

The Entrance sits on the narrow channel where Tuggerah Lake empties into the Pacific, and it has been a holiday town since the nineteenth century. That history still defines it. It is the most visited destination on the Central Coast, and the built form shows it, with waterfront units, holiday apartments and a compact town centre pressed between the lake and the ocean. The resident population skews older, with people in their sixties the largest group and a median age in the low fifties, and it is by far the most rental-heavy suburb in the region, with fewer than four in ten homes owner-occupied.

Living here means living in a town that is packed on weekends and quiet on Tuesdays. People move for the water on both sides, the flat foreshore paths running in either direction, and a town centre where the supermarket, library, post office and cafes all sit within a few blocks of the sand. The trade-offs are the tourist rhythm, the summer parking and the holiday traffic across the bridge. For retirees, and for renters who want to be able to walk everywhere, it is one of the most self-contained spots on the Coast.

The Entrance features

Memorial Park on the channel foreshore is the town’s centre of gravity, hosting Saturday markets, a historic carousel and Vera’s Water Garden, a splash playground built around brightly coloured sea creature fountains. The daily draw is Pelican Time at Pelican Plaza, a free afternoon session run by volunteers from Marine Wildlife Rescue Central Coast, where dozens of pelicans gather along the foreshore and the crowd gets a short talk on the birds and the ecology of the lake. It has been running for over thirty years.

The town has ocean on one side and lake on the other. The Entrance Beach sits south of the channel beside the town centre and is patrolled through the warmer months by The Entrance Surf Life Saving Club, while North Entrance Beach runs north across the bridge towards Magenta. At the southern end, the heritage-listed Grant McBride Baths have been part of the town since 1938, with three pools, free entry, change rooms and daily patrols that continue right through winter.

The Entrance Road is the main street, curving along the waterfront past Lakeside Plaza and its Coles supermarket, banks, the library, the post office, a cinema and a run of cafes, takeaways and independent shops. The northern end opens onto Memorial Park and the waterfront eateries, where the seafood is the local specialty. Further along, Picnic Point Reserve gives the town its lakeside park, with barbecues, a boat ramp, shaded picnic areas and views out to Pelican Island.

The Channel Boardwalk follows the water from Memorial Park around to the surf club, with interpretive signs on local birdlife along the way, and forms part of the longer Coast to Lake Walk. The Tuggerah Lakes cycleway runs south along the shoreline towards Long Jetty and beyond, flat the whole way and popular with walkers, cyclists and pram-pushers. Wyrrabalong National Park protects the headlands north and south of town, and Norah Head Lighthouse is a short drive up the coast.

The Entrance Public School serves the town centre, and Tuggerah Lakes Secondary College has its senior campus here, taking Year 11 and 12 students from across the district, with the college’s Berkeley Vale and Tumbi Umbi campuses covering Years 7 to 10. Buses run frequently south to Gosford and west to Wyong and Westfield Tuggerah. Tuggerah Station is the railway station residents drive or bus to for Sydney and Newcastle services, and Wyong Hospital covers emergencies.
