What’s it like to live in Toukley?

Toukley sits on a narrow neck of land with Tuggerah Lake on one side and Budgewoi Lake on the other, which gives the town an almost-island feel and puts water at the end of most streets. It has the oldest profile of the suburbs in this part of the Coast: residents in their seventies are the largest age group, childless couples the most common household, and the town’s history as a fishing and holiday spot still shows in the caravan parks and older cottages. A little over half of homes are owner-occupied, so there is a solid rental and holiday-letting layer as well.

That profile is shifting. Main Road has picked up cafes, a growing food scene and a steady flow of younger families moving to the northern end of the Coast, and the town centre has had a run of upgrades around the Village Green. Toukley is genuinely self-contained: shops, medical practices, the library, the clubs and the Sunday markets are all within the town, and the surf beaches and the lighthouse at Norah Head are a short drive east. People move here for a full set of services in a small town where the water is never far away.

Toukley features

Main Road is the town’s spine, a working high street of butchers, bakeries, pharmacies, medical practices, op shops, the library and an increasing number of cafes. The Village Green anchors it with a playground, a fig tree garden and the town’s community events, and the Toukley Markets run every Sunday morning in the Toukley Shopping Centre carpark on Canton Beach Road with well over seventy stalls of produce, plants and local makers.

Canton Beach is the town’s lakeside swimming spot on Tuggerah Lake, with shallow water, a playground, barbecues and paddleboard hire, and it is where most local families end up on a hot afternoon. On the other side of the neck, Osborne Park sits on Budgewoi Lake with a boat ramp and picnic ground. Between the two lakes, Toukley is one of the better bases on the Coast for fishing, sailing and small boats.

Clubs and pubs matter here. The Beachcomber Hotel, universally called the Beachie, has been refurbished into a lakeside pub with a pool club and is a Central Coast institution, while The Ary Toukley, formerly Toukley RSL, covers the club end with a bistro and a children’s play area. Toukley Golf Club is the other social hub, an easy walking course with a reputation as one of the friendliest on the Coast.

The ocean is a short drive east through Noraville. Soldiers Beach at Norah Head is the patrolled surf beach and holds some of the best breaks in the region, while Cabbage Tree Harbour has a small ocean pool and a boat ramp tucked between rocky headlands. The Norah Head Lighthouse and its keepers’ cottages stand above them, and Noraville House, built in the 1850s by the prospector Edward Hargraves, still sits on the clifftop over Hargraves Beach.

Toukley Public School takes students from preschool to Year 6, with St Mary’s Catholic Primary School at neighbouring Noraville and Gorokan High School at Lake Haven and Northlakes High School at San Remo the usual secondary options. Toukley has its own police station and a good bus network running to Wyong Station, Lake Haven Centre and The Entrance. Wyong Hospital is the nearest emergency department, and the M1 is reached via the Pacific Highway at Doyalson.
