What’s it like to live in Tuggerah?

Tuggerah is known to the rest of the Coast as a destination rather than a place to live, and the numbers bear that out: fewer than a thousand residents in a suburb dominated by a Westfield, a business park and light industry. The people who do live here are strikingly young for the region, with the largest age group in their twenties and a median age in the mid thirties, and households are more likely to be couples with children than in the surrounding suburbs. Household incomes are the highest of the northern Coast suburbs, reflecting a residential pocket of newer homes rather than the retail strip that gives the suburb its name.

The appeal is simple: nothing is far away. The station is on the Sydney to Newcastle line, the motorway interchange is at the door, and the Coast’s second-largest shopping centre is a walk from the newer streets. It is not a suburb with a village heart or a foreshore, and anyone wanting either drives a few minutes to Wyong or down to the lake. What Tuggerah offers instead is a small, quiet residential population attached to an enormous amount of employment, retail and transport, which is a rare combination on the Central Coast.

Tuggerah features

Westfield Tuggerah on Wyong Road opened in 1995 and is the second-largest shopping centre on the Central Coast after Erina Fair, with more than two hundred stores across two levels, seven anchor tenants, a cinema complex and parking for over three thousand cars. It is the default weekly shop and the default wet-weather outing for a large slice of the northern Coast, and the bus interchange there connects out to Wyong, The Entrance, Bateau Bay and the lakeside suburbs.

The Tuggerah Business Park and the industrial estates either side of the motorway make the suburb one of the region’s biggest employment centres, with warehousing, trades, light manufacturing, car dealerships and homemaker retail clustered along the Tuggerah Straight. It gives Tuggerah a weekday rhythm quite unlike the coastal towns, quiet in the residential streets and busy on the arterials, and it is why a good share of residents work close to home rather than commuting south.

Tuggerah Station sits on the Central Coast and Newcastle line with regular services to Gosford, Sydney and Newcastle, and it is also the station most residents of The Entrance and the lakeside suburbs drive to. The M1 Pacific Motorway interchange is immediately west, and Wyong Road runs east across the top of Tuggerah Lake towards Berkeley Vale and the coast. Commuter parking at the station fills early on weekdays, which is the standing local complaint.

Tuggerah Public School serves local primary students, with Wyong High School and the Berkeley Vale campus of Tuggerah Lakes Secondary College the nearby public secondary options, and Wyong Christian Community School the closest independent one. Wyong Hospital, with its emergency department, is a short drive north. The medical, dental and allied health services clustered around the Westfield precinct and the business park cover most day-to-day needs without leaving the suburb.

Tuggerah Lake, the largest coastal lake system in New South Wales, begins just east of the suburb, and the Tuggerah Lakes cycleway follows the shoreline towards The Entrance and Long Jetty on a flat, sealed path. Wyrrabalong National Park protects the coastal strip beyond, with Crackneck Lookout a well-known spot for whale watching in season. The beaches at The Entrance, Shelly Beach and Bateau Bay are all an easy drive east across the lake.
