What’s it like to live in Umina Beach?
Umina Beach is the most populated suburb on the Central Coast, and it wears that scale lightly. The layout helps: a flat grid of streets named after Australian capitals, with Sydney, Melbourne and Hobart Avenues running back from an unbroken stretch of sand towards the bush. The people who live here are a genuine mix. Sea-changers and retirees who arrived decades ago share the streets with young families who have come north from Sydney, and the largest single age group is in their fifties. Owner-occupiers make up close to two thirds of households, which gives the place a settled, lived-in feel rather than a holiday-let one.
What people move for is the combination of a real beach and a real town. West Street handles the shopping, the sand handles the weekends, and almost everything in between is walkable or a short flat ride on a bike. It is not a polished resort strip, and locals tend to like it that way: surf clubs, bakeries, bowling clubs and a lot of families at the playground behind the dunes. The trade-offs are that the train is a bus ride away at Woy Woy rather than at the end of the street, and that summer brings a serious visitor influx to a suburb that is otherwise quiet.
Umina Beach features
Umina Beach and Ocean Beach are one continuous shoreline divided in name only, and each end has its own surf club: Umina Surf Life Saving Club at the southern end of Ocean Beach Road and Ocean Beach Surf Life Saving Club off Trafalgar Avenue. The southern corner near Umina Point, the sandstone headland also known as Mount Ettymalong, stays calmest and is where most families and beginner surfers set up. Behind the dunes sits one of the largest playgrounds on the Coast, with a skate park, BMX track, bouldering wall and the Jasmine Greens kiosk.
West Street is the retail centre for the whole Peninsula rather than just Umina, with Coles, Woolworths, Aldi and Bunnings sitting alongside independent shops and cafes. Bremen Patisserie has been baking on the strip for over thirty years and has taken national pie awards for its trouble. The street does everyday errands rather than tourist trade, which is part of its appeal. On the third Sunday of each month the Umina Beach Markets set up on the grass beside the surf club with local produce, makers, food stalls and live music.
Sport runs through the suburb. Umina Oval on Melbourne Avenue is the shared home ground for soccer, rugby league, cricket and tennis, with the Umina Beach Bunnies playing on Col Gooley Field and the Umina Devils fielding two cricket squares. McEvoy Oval at the western end of McEvoy Avenue covers athletics, touch football and cricket. Club Umina on Melbourne Avenue houses the RSL bowls club and the associated social side, and the Ocean Beach Malibu Club keeps the longboard tradition going on the northern half of the beach.
Umina Public School has been teaching local children since it opened in 1956, and Brisbane Water Secondary College takes students on from there. Its Umina Campus on Veron Road covers Years 7 to 9, including a selective creative and performing arts stream, before students move to the Woy Woy Campus on Edward Street for Years 10 to 12. Ettalong Public School on Karingi Street is the other nearby primary option. Gosford Hospital is the closest emergency department, with Woy Woy Hospital handling rehabilitation and aged care.
Busways services connect Umina Beach to Woy Woy railway station and on to Gosford, with Ocean Beach Road, West Street and Barrenjoey Road the main routes in and out. Deepwater Plaza at Woy Woy, anchored by Coles and Kmart, covers the bigger shopping runs. Brisbane Water National Park sits behind the Peninsula with sandstone ridges and walking tracks, and the walk around the Mount Ettalong headland leads to Pearl Beach, a quieter cove with a rock pool, one general store and a view worth the climb.
