What’s it like to live in Woy Woy?
Woy Woy is the commercial centre of the Woy Woy Peninsula, a low-lying town wrapped in water on three sides where Brisbane Water narrows towards the Hawkesbury. It is the largest and busiest of the Peninsula suburbs, with a proper town centre, a railway station in the middle of it and a population older than the regional average, led by residents in their sixties. Owner-occupancy is lower here than in the beach suburbs and closer to half the housing stock, so the mix runs from long-settled retirees and renters to Sydney commuters who chose Woy Woy specifically for the direct train.
The feel is more town than village, and more working than resort. The centre carries shops, clubs, medical services and the everyday business of thirty-odd thousand people across the Peninsula, while the streets running off it are a patchwork of weatherboard cottages, red-brick units and waterfront homes on the canals and bays. Water is never far away, and the foreshore reserves are genuinely well used. People move here for the combination that is rare on the Coast: a train to Sydney from a town centre you can walk to, with beaches and national park in the other direction.
Woy Woy features
Woy Woy Station sits in the middle of the town centre and is the suburb’s single biggest asset, with regular services on the Central Coast and Newcastle line running south to Sydney and north towards Gosford and Newcastle. The line emerges from the Woy Woy tunnel through the Brisbane Water escarpment, and the walk from the platform to Deepwater Plaza takes a couple of minutes. Bus services fan out from the interchange across Umina Beach, Ettalong Beach and Blackwall.
Deepwater Plaza on Railway Street is the Peninsula’s main shopping centre, carrying Coles, Kmart, specialty stores, a medical centre and a food court under one roof, with more shops spilling onto the surrounding streets. It is busy every day of the week and is the reason people from Umina, Ettalong and Empire Bay come into Woy Woy. The centre and the station together give the town a walkable core that most Central Coast suburbs simply do not have.
The Brisbane Water foreshore is Woy Woy’s great public space. Lions Park on North Burge Road has waterfront lawns, playgrounds, free barbecues, boat ramps and a cycleway, and the pelicans that congregate around the fish cleaning tables are a fixture. Down at The Boulevarde, Woy Woy Fishermen’s Wharf sells fresh seafood and fish and chips over the water and is one of the most recognisable spots on the Peninsula, with a playground alongside for the inevitable family stop.
The town has a strong club culture. Everglades Country Club on Dunban Road combines an eighteen-hole golf course, bowling greens, restaurants and a live music room, and is one of the larger venues on the Peninsula. Woy Woy also carries a well-known literary footnote: Spike Milligan’s parents settled here and the comedian visited often, leaving behind a long-running affection for the town’s name and the Spike Milligan Bridge over the channel to Blackwall.
For schools, Woy Woy Public School at Blackwall and Park Roads and Woy Woy South Public School serve local primary students, with Brisbane Water Secondary College Woy Woy Campus on Edward Street taking senior secondary years. The nearest ocean beach is Umina Beach, a short drive south, while Brisbane Water National Park wraps the suburb’s western and northern edges with sandstone ridges, Aboriginal engraving sites and walking tracks running down to the Hawkesbury.
