What’s it like to live in Wyong?
Wyong is a working town rather than a coastal one, set on the Wyong River where the hinterland valleys meet the rail line. It is one of the two civic centres for Central Coast Council, and the town has the council chambers, courthouse, police station and TAFE campus to match. The residential population is small for the size of the suburb and skews older, with people in their fifties the largest group, and a bit over half of homes are owner-occupied. Renters and first-time buyers make up a solid share, drawn by a town centre where the station, the shops and the services sit within a few blocks of each other.
The pull is practicality, plus a hinterland that starts almost immediately. Trains to Sydney and Newcastle leave from the middle of town, the motorway is close, and the farmland of the Yarramalong and Dooralong valleys runs west from the edge of the suburb. Wyong has also quietly built a small food and arts scene over the past decade, which has changed how people on the Coast talk about the place. It is not a beach town and makes no attempt to be one, but the ocean is a short drive east and Tuggerah Lake is closer still.
Wyong features
The Wyong Milk Factory on Alison Road, a dairy building that has stood since the early twentieth century, has been restored into the town’s best-known destination. It houses a family-friendly tavern and sports bar with a hideaway play area, alongside Little Creek Cheese, Luka Chocolates and Udderly Sweet Gelato. Across the road, Alison Homestead operates as the district museum, with local artefacts, wartime memorabilia, model buildings and a schoolhouse set in its gardens. Look for the bright pink cow marking the entrance to the Milk Factory site.
The Art House on Margaret Street, at the corner of Anzac Avenue, is the region’s main performing arts and conference venue, programming theatre, music, comedy and touring productions through the year. It stands a short walk from Wyong station, and the surrounding blocks have filled in around it: Glee Coffee Roasters in the heritage Chapman Building, Duck Duck Moose in the gallery precinct and Osteria A’ Mano for dinner before a show. The street art through Tightrope Lane has become a photo stop in its own right.
Wyong Race Club runs regular meetings at Wyong Racecourse, and race days bring crowds in from across the northern Coast. Club Wyong covers the bistro and function side of town life, with booking ahead the local custom. The heritage streetscape is unusual for this end of the Coast: Chapmans Store on the corner of Alison Road and Hely Street has traded since 1901, the courthouse dates from 1924, and St Cecilia’s Church on Byron Street, built in 1908, is the oldest church in town and still in use.
Wyong Public School on Cutler Drive traces its history back to 1888, though it has been on its current site since 1979. Wyong High School takes students from Year 7 through to Year 12, and Wyong Christian Community School is the main independent option nearby. Wyong Hospital, north of the town centre, is the main public hospital for the northern Central Coast and has an emergency department. The TAFE NSW campus sits in the town centre itself, covering vocational and trade training.
Wyong Station is a stop on the Central Coast and Newcastle line with regular services in both directions, and the M1 Pacific Motorway is a short drive from the town centre. Village Central Wyong handles the daily shopping, with Westfield Tuggerah nearby for anything larger. Wyong Creek and the Wyong River are good for a paddle, with platypus occasionally sighted by kayakers, and Tuggerah Lake, The Entrance and the coastal headlands of Wyrrabalong National Park are all an easy drive east.
