What's it like to live in Charlestown?
Although Lake Macquarie doesn’t have an official capital, for many Charlestown fits the bill. Its shopping centre dominates the retail scene and doubles as a transport hub for everyone in the LGA. Plus, it’s very central – making it easy to get out to the lake, to the beach or up to Newcastle.

Charlestown features
For many newcomers to the area, Charlestown is often synonymous with the shopping centre. Charlestown Square is the biggest in the area, with three supermarkets, a cinema, all the shops you’d expect to see in a mall and two outdoor dining areas (plus an indoor food court). Step outside and you’ll come across a bustling high street on Pacific Highway.
But as you live in the area longer, you get to realise that Charlestown is so much more than just the shops. Community features like a bus hub for the rest of Lake Mac, a community swimming pool and a regional library. For the sporty, you’ve got cricket ovals, soccer pitches and netball courts, plus it’s not far to Whitebridge and the Fernleigh Track.
Housing stock is varied in Charlestown. From family homes, smaller townhouses and plenty of units. Macquarie Tower is a recent addition to the skyline, with 15 storeys offering city, ocean and bush views. Records aren’t easy to find but it’s definitely the tallest residential building in the Lake Macquarie-Newcastle region and may be the tallest in NSW outside Sydney.
Although Charlestown isn’t on the lake itself, it’s in a great position. It’s just a short drive to Warners Bay and the water’s edge, but equally you can head east and take a dip in the ocean at Dudley or Redhead. To the north, it’s a short drive to Newcastle and, to the south, you can explore the rest of Lake Macquarie and head on beyond to the Central Coast and Sydney.
