Toronto features
If western Lake Macquarie had a capital, it would be Toronto.
Established as a waterside retreat from the big smoke of Sydney, Toronto offers the best of all worlds. Sitting right on the lake, you’ve got scenic walking routes, cafes with stunning views and easy access to the water. On the other side of the suburb, you’ll find bushland and walking trails to fill every weekend of the year.
Toronto is one of the few suburbs in Lake Mac to have an old fashioned high street with a huge number of shops. From supermarkets and chain stores to op shops and boutiques, everything you could want is here. Cafes, restaurants and takeaways are also in plentiful supply.
As well as the foreshore, there’s also plenty of green space in Lions Park where you’ll find regular markets throughout the year. Much like the Fernleigh Track in Newcastle, Toronto marks the start (or end) point of the Greenway Pathway, a a walking/cycling trail that makes use of an old rail line out to Fassifern.
You’d think with all this on your doorstep, plus homes with decent sized gardens, you’d have to spend millions. But Toronto remains one of the most affordable suburbs in the area. As of April 2024, the median house price is $815k (units are $722k) giving you prices that most parts of Newy just can’t match (nevermind Sydney).
