Wangi Wangi features
Sticking out prominently into Lake Macquarie, Wangi Wangi is a suburb that’s loved for its water access, artistic history and families who want the perfect mix of suburbia and nature.
Known simply as Wangi to locals, it’s a suburb with a rich and diverse history. There’s debate over the original meaning of the suburb, with three schools of thought saying it means either place of much water, many owls or many dark green trees in Awabakal. All three remain present in the suburb, which has boat access (but no longer the historic ferry routes), bushland with walking trails and plenty of wild birdlife.
Wangi is also home to Dobell House, the former residence of Archibald Prize winner Sir William Dobell. His home has been transformed into a museum and gallery celebrating the artist’s life. Another historical relic, the ruins of a WWII anti-aircraft gun can be seen towards the point, where there’s also a caravan park and a few bush trails.
There’s little in the way of shops or cafes, but a quick drive up to Toronto gives you access to everything you could need.
With a population of just short of 3,000 people, Wangi is a close-knit community that has some of the best access to Lake Mac and some of the most incredible sunrises over the water.
