Birmingham Gardens features
Although the next suburb over, the main draw for Birmingham Gardens is its proximity to the University of Newcastle campus in Callaghan.
The suburb is mainly populated by leased properties, but there are a few gems hidden away. The most obvious is the Regal Cinema, an independent cinema that’s been a favourite with locals for years. Although it closed a few years ago, rumours are that it’s going to re-open again in late 2025. Elsewhere in Birmingham Gardens, there’s AG Mart, but it’s also just a short walk to the shops in Jesmond or the Shorty pub.
Despite being a built-up suburb, there are pockets of greenery, too. Birmingham Lookout on the east and the bigger, family-friendly Harold Myers Park in the west provide an escape to nature.
BG’s location is also perfect for commuting, whether you want to go north to Raymond Terrace and Port Stephens, into town or to a busier suburb like Wallsend. The new bypass extension, due to open late 2025/early 2026, will also be of benefit to people in Birmingham Gardens.
