What's it like to live in Carrington?
If it’s community you’re after, Carrington is the place for you. Like Islington and Tighes Hill, Carrington is built around its residents. Separated from Newcastle city centre by the Throsby Creek, Carrington feels like a small town away from the big city. The old miners’ cottages give the suburb a unique appeal, and small local businesses help maintain the allure.

Carrington features
The Cowper Street Bridge and Elizabeth Street are the only ways in and out of Carrington, separating it from Tighes Hill and Wickham. These access points give it a feeling of isolation while move heavily populated areas are just a short drive away.
The heart of the suburb is on Young Street, where you’ll find the aptly named Young Street Hotel, as well as cafes, restaurants, the Fairmont Diner and a Spar convenience store. A street back from here is the local bowling club and a green space with a playground and cricket ovals. These lead to the Throsby Creek, the Newcastle Rowing Club and the start of the Newy Parkrun, one of the flattest 5k routes in the city where hundreds meet every Saturday morning for a casual run.
Other times of the week, this route follows the water over to Wickham. Along the path you’ll find another playground, an off-least dog park and an elevated walkway through the mangroves.
As well as the Young Street shops, there are plenty of other businesses dotted around the suburb. Earp Distillery on Darlington is a popular tasting experience for gin lovers and Moa & Co on Gipps Street is a combination of a coffee shop, an events space and Saturday markets (perfect after you finish the Parkrun). Based in Moa is Grounded by Designs, a local pottery studio that sells ceramics and runs hands-on courses.
