Cooks Hill features
The bit attraction to Cooks Hill is Darby Street. Newcastle’s favourite street is full of cafes, restaurants and boutique stores. Some of these have been here decades, like Goldbergs, while others come whenever a new trend pops up. Shops like Jean Bas and Made on Darby bring a unique touch to the area, and you can find all your essentials like pharmacies, dentists and supermarkets, too.
Darby stays alive into the night, too. There are plenty of restaurants spanning multiple cuisines and bars like 5 Sawyers, Lowlands Bowling Club and the Oriental busy and popular throughout the year.
Beside Lowlands is Centennial Park, a leafy green space with a playground perfect for children of all ages. Just outside the suburb boundaries there’s also Nesca Park and Number 1 Sports Ground. For indoor sport, head to SportsParc (formerly Howzat) where you can play soccer, futsal, netball or make use of their gym and pilates spaces.
There are plenty of buses on Darby Street, too, and it’s just a short walk to the light rail. Cooks Hill borders onto Newcastle suburb, which includes Civic Park, Hunter Street Mall and the foreshore.
Although Cooks Hill doesn’t technically have a beach, it’s a very, very short walk to Bar Beach, Susan Gilmore and the ANZAC Memorial Walk.
It’s a surprise to many, but Cooks Hill isn’t actually named after James Cook as you might expect. Instead, it’s named after Samuel Cook, a wealthy landowner near Tamworth.
