What's it like to live in Kotara?
Kotara is a hugely popular suburb and regularly named among the best places to live in Newcastle. It’s just ten minutes to anywhere in the city, but often what you need is right on your doorstep. Plus, it has one of the best rated high schools north of the Hawkesbury River.
Despite this, property values are a lot lower than areas like Adamstown, Cooks Hill, Merewether and Newcastle East, so if you’re looking for a bargain in an area with all the best amenities, Kotara’s definitely worth a look.

Kotara features
Kotara’s the suburb that’s got it all. While many visitors only know it for its great shopping options – with its Westfield across the street from a vast homemaker centre. You can find everything you need here, from cinemas and gyms to swim schools and a weekend Bunnings sausage sizzle.
But people who make Kotara home know it’s so much more. And if you can’t find it in the suburb itself, you won’t have to go far.
For families, Kotara High School is rated as one of the best in Newcastle and the suburb is dotted with small parks. For something a bit bigger, Blackbutt and Richley Reserves are just a short drive away. The free animal exhibit at Blackbutt and Richley’s large playground are a hit with kids of all ages.
Road links to other suburbs are great. Park Avenue takes you up to Charlestown and Lake Macquarie in one direction and Adamstown and inner Newcastle in the other. Crossing that you have Lookout Road which takes you to Lambton, Rankin Park and on the way to Port Stephens.
As well as that, Kotara has its own train station so you can easily get down to Sydney if you don’t fancy the drive. Some of the trains that stop at Kotara take a little longer to make it to Central so you may want to drive to Broadmeadow or Cardiff to get an express option.
