Lambton features
Centred around Lambton Park, Lambton dates back to 1863 when a colliery opened (where Lewis Oval now stands). Since then, it’s grown to become one of Newcastle’s most desirable suburbs.
The park is a natural attraction with sporting ovals, tennis courts, bowling club and playground. There’s also a rotunda that’s close to an open space where markets and Christmas carols are held, plus a small library that’s open 24/7 (but unstaffed) to members.
Beside the park is Lambton Pool, one of the council’s largest public swimming pools. Entry for 2025 has been reduced to $2 per person.
Many of the shops and attractions are close to the park as well. You’ll find Lambton Park Hotel on the corner of Howe and Morehead streets, and then all the way up to Elder Street you’ll find institutions like Flamingos Live (formerly Lizotte’s) and Northumberland Hotel. Elder Street is the suburb’s main street with plenty of cafes, grocery stores and takeaways to choose from.
Unlike other suburbs, Lambton has a smattering of businesses and cafes on back streets, so it always pays to take a wander. Newcastle Theatre can be found on one of those.
For parents, Lambton High is rated as one of the top public high schools in Newcastle.
