Maryville features
One of the few suburbs in Newcastle to be named after a woman, Maryville honours the wife of the area’s first mayor, James Hannel (who himself gives his name to the main road going through the suburb).
Surrounded by Throsby Creek on three sides, Maryville gives great opportunity for waterside living while being close to some of the city’s best-loved businesses. Whether it’s Uprising Bakery, the Maryville Tavern or the children’s favourite of Revolution, Maryville is visited by many and loved by all.
All along the water is a popular walking and cycleway, which makes up part of one of Newy’s flattest Park Runs. This leads all the way into town (and out to Islington the other way) which adds charm and the possibility of an active lifestyle to the suburb.
There’s very little in the way of green space in the suburb, just a small strip (and playground) by the water. Just across the water in Carrington, there’s a boardwalk through the mangroves where you can spot native wildlife, and on the other side the suburb backs onto Islington Park which is as good as in Maryville.
In terms of property, there’s a mix of older style buildings mixed with newer apartments and townhouses, especially by the water. The change in rail making Wickham the last spot on the line makes Maryville a lot more desirable and with that comes the gaze of developers and higher buildings.
