What's it like to live in Newcastle East?
Newcastle East is one of the few suburbs in the Newcastle region that is primarily green (or sandy), with Foreshore Park, Camp Shortland and Newcastle Beach making up most of the area.
The built up areas have a charm, too. Many of Newcastle’s older, colonial homes are found in the East End while a swathe of newer units are found along the water with ocean views.

Newcastle East features
If you want to enjoy Newcastle’s beaches, historic past and best hot chips, Newcastle East is the spot for you.
Newcastle Beach is the obvious draw, along with its ocean baths and child-friendly canoe pool. The walk along here takes you to the hot food kiosk at Newcastle Beach up past Nobbys Beach and along the breakwall, a popular walking, running and cycling route.
Some of the city’s most popular dining options are found in the East End. Sticky Rice is one of the top-rated Thai restaurants while Scottie’s is the premier fish and chip shop. Grain Store is a popular bar that showcases some of Australia’s best craft breweries. The suburb edges onto Hunter Street Mall, currently undergoing redevelopment, which has an incredible choice of cafes, including the ever-popular Kafey Cafe.
Colonial architecture is found throughout the East End’s streets which are dotted with small green spaces, but the Foreshore is a sweeping expanse of grass popular with families and sporting wannabes. Many of the city’s most popular events happen here, including the main New Year celebrations.
Another important landmark in the suburb is Fort Scratchley, a structure that dates back to 1882 and was initially constructed to protect Newcastle from Russian attack.
