Newcastle West features
Made up mostly of King Street and Hunter Street, two of Newcastle’s most prominent roads, Newcastle West has been an important part of this city for a long time.
Although the retail power has moved out of town slightly to the largest shopping centres at Charlestown and Kotara, Newcastle West home to a number of boutique stores as well as the supermarkets and shopping centres at Marketown.
Behind Marketown are a number of sporting hubs, including Number 1 Sports Ground, Number 2 Sports Ground and a huge collection of netball courts. Some of the city’s biggest sporting teams play here, including the Newcastle Jets Women who play their home games at the Number 2 Sports Ground.
Since the truncation of the heavy rail line, Newcastle West is the final station on the line, as well as the starting point for the tram that goes up to Newcastle Beach.
Around this sort of time, Newcastle West and neighbouring suburbs like Wickham saw a huge development boom as high rise apartment blocks got bigger and more plentiful. Homes in the suburb are few and far between, but there are plenty of units for first home buyers and downsizers who want the best of city living.
