Sandgate is known to many locals as home to one of the largest cemeteries in the region, but it’s also home to a small community who love its quiet streets and handy location. 

Found on the Pacific Highway beside Shortland, Sandgate is a commuter’s dream. It’s just 10km from Newcastle CBD, but its highway location makes it easy to head north to Port Stephens or south to Lake Macquarie. It also has its own train station if you prefer to take public transport. 

Close to the old BHP site, Sandgate remains true to its blue collar roots. The streets are full of industrial businesses and jobs, with some – like the Newcastle Flower Market – known across the city for their high quality products. 

Other than this, shops are few and far between. A servo on the highway helps with small odds and ends,  but trips into Jesmond or other nearby suburbs are required for big shops.
