Shortland features
Shortland backs onto the Hunter Wetlands, a huge national park on the edges of Newcastle LGA. A $25 annual pass gives you free reign of the wetlands, including its incredible hiking trails.
Its proximity to the wetlands does mean it gets more than its fair share of mozzies, especially towards the end of the year, but locals will share their tips for keeping them at bay.
Shortland has much of what you need within its boundaries. The majority of businesses are found along Sandgate Road: including servos, the Shorty Hotel and a few takeaway spots. Further into the suburb, you’ll find an RSL, schools, healthcare and more.
Within just a few minutes’ drive, you can find pretty much everything you need whether that’s in Hexham (or a bit further on to Raymond Terrace), Jesmond or over to Callaghan for the uni.
Shortland has seen a recent surge in new apartments, popular with both first time buyers and investors looking to capitalise on the student rental market. Rent for units is actually more than for houses because of this.
