The Hill features
The Hill is one of Newy’s oldest suburbs, full of historic monuments and beautiful architecture. As the name suggests, The Hill has some incredibly steep streets, but make it to the top and you’ll be rewarded with incredible views over the water and nearby suburbs like Cooks Hill and Newcastle East.
The Hill is one of Newcastle’s oldest suburbs and it’s home to many of its most famous landmarks. Christ Church Cathedral, The Obelisk and the Anzac Memorial Walk are all in The Hill.
Australia’s first ever railway line was in The Hill, taking coal down to the waterfront. This line no longer exists, but Brown Street follows the same (steep) route down to the Foreshore.
In among the olden day buildings are a couple of beautiful parks. Nesca Park has an off-leash dog area, a children’s playground a petanque club while Arcadia Park is a hidden slice of greenery near the Obelisk and Newcastle Tennis Club.
The suburb of The Hill backs onto the ocean, taking in the Memorial Walk and Susan Gilmore Beach, sandwiched between King Edward Park on one side and Bar Beach on the other.
