Waratah West features
A quiet suburb tucked behind the uni, Waratah West is an affordable suburb that’s big on community.
Just outside the suburb’s boundary you’ll find the University of Newcastle and the Calvary Mater, two big employers in the area and a large proportion of the residents of Waratah West.
The suburb itself is on the quieter side, a big plus for many who live there, but there are a few unique attractions including Kabushka Ngemba’s art studio and the Newcastle Pistol Club.
For green spaces, you have Morpeth Road Playground, the Ray Watt Oval and the Thomas Percy Oval, as well as the massive Acacia Avenue Dog Park across the road in North Lambton. Waratah West is also home to the infamous Braye Park, a popular recommendation in pretty much every local Reddit thread. While it might be fine during the day for a run, just be aware that at night it turns into an anonymous hookup zone.
