Wickham features
Thought by some to be the unofficial CBD of Newcastle these days, Wickham is a suburb that’s undergone huge development in recent years.
The shortening of the rail line and the development of the Interchange and tram line have made Wickham the transportation hub of the city. Add in the shift of council offices from the Civic Precinct and the flurry of high rises that have shown up overnight, and you’ve got an area that’s almost unrecognisable from ten years ago. The huge supply of apartments has seen prices dip slightly, but rental prices have grown steadily.
Despite these change, some old favourite remain. The Lass O’Gowrie stands strong as the city’s best live music venue, Sticky Rice remains one of Newy’s most popular Thai restaurants and Masa Madre holds the same honour for pizza lovers.
An aerial view of the suburb shows off the large green space by Hawkins Oval while the boats and walkway along Throsby Creek are popular throughout the year. Leading into Honeysuckle in one direction and out to Maryville and Tighes Hill in the other, the waterside walkway is very popular on sunny days, especially on Saturdays when it makes up part of a popular (and flat) Parkrun route.
